“…a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” – The World Health Organization
A wellness program is a comprehensive health initiative designed to maintain or improve well-being through proper nutrition, exercise, stress management, and illness prevention. Wellness programs can include smoking stoppage, weight loss regime, fitness challenges, therapy, and many other plans designed to increase the overall health of an individual.
In the Seafaring industry where medical fitness of the individual seafarer is of paramount importance, health and wellness programs as an initiative from ship owners are wanting. However, not in terms of rules and regulations because the STCW Convention and MLC 2006 spell out very high standards in medical fitness requirements!
Have we heard of a health and wellness program from our shipping companies? This column is searching and longing to hear some! At least, there are companies imposing certain rules on BMI requirements for their seafarers, that is commendable as it is bringing forward awareness in the ranks of the seafarers. How about health and wellness programs initiated by companies that will benefit our Seafarers?
